Hey,
The last couple of weeks our class have been working on a new writing task, this one involves us inventing our own sport and writing an explanation text. Mr. Wegner had showed us two videos on two different sports that we would not of heard of before one about Artistic cycling and Ultimate frisbee. Here is the text I wrote on my new sport, Skate Ball:
Skate Ball
Description
This sport involves a mix of Basketball, Netball, Rugby Union and Skating. This is played with a regular basketball on an unusual court. This sport will take extreme to a whole new level as players fight for the ball in this full on game.
Court
This court is one never before seen as this spectacular sport is played under the surface and above. Within the “bowl” being under the surface this allows players to use their skate boards to skate up the walls and be free to pass. If a player has the ball while skating up the “bowl” the player must pass before skating back down. In the middle of the court is a free zone where ALL of the frees are taken. The court is the double the size of a basketball court but above it runs 5 metres out before reaching the end zone.
End Zone
Before the end zone is an area which a player from each team will guard from the opposing team. Because the end zone is above the surface this makes it harder for a player to dribble up the side of the bowl and score 3 points using the end zone. Therefore there is a ramp behind the basketball hoop which makes it possible to ride up while dribbling the ball.
Players and Requirements
The players must be armed in protection pads and have the latest caster board the rip stick air. This game requires a basketball and 2 teams of 5 players.
Starting the Game
The ball is thrown down into the “bowl” by the reff like a football throw in and players then continue the game.
Skills
The skills needed to play this full on sport are extreme balance which is used in the ridding of the rip stick, dribbling and shooting skills as used in a basketball game. Players need to be tough, confident and resilient about the game. All of these skills are used in skate ball once mastered you could be a player in no time.
Scoring
The way you play this game makes it an interesting way to score points for your team. At each end of the court is an end zone once the try is scored inside the end zone the player’s team will receive 3 points. The original basketball shot is only worth 2 points but every shot scored your team will receive a player that had been eliminated by falling off their skateboard (rip stick).
Game Length and Substitutions
This Sport is played with 4 quarters running for 15 minutes each along with 5 minute breaks in-between. The last 3 minutes of the last quarter is stopped between each fowl, elimination, ect. Substitutions can only be made between quarters or if a player is sent off because of injury, no substitutions can be made with an eliminated player.
Frees and Fowls
All frees are taken at the free zone in the middle of the court were the players than continue with their game. Once a player has reached 5 fowls they are sent off for the rest of the game, no substitutions can be made for a fouled off player. Once the TEAM has reached its full limit of 8 fowls the team is then disqualified. Team fowls are restarted every quarter unlike the single fowls which run for the whole game. All rules made in this game involving the basketball side of things stays with the basketball regulations as in the fowls called and frees given.
Elimination
Elimination is what gives this game the twist. If a player falls off their rip stick they get sent off due to elimination. If the player had fallen off due to a fowl or if the player fell off after the whistle has been blown the player is not sent off. Only 3 players from each side can be eliminated at once and if the current playing players fall off, instead of getting sent off due to elimination rules they receive a fowl.
